What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
What to wear for your maternity session in Frisco, from color palettes to flowing fabrics, plus a simple guide to maternity dresses for your photoshoot.
Figuring out what to wear for your maternity session is usually the part that causes the most stress before a shoot, more than the location or the weather. The good news is that a beautiful maternity gallery does not depend on an elaborate wardrobe. It depends on a few simple choices made ahead of time, so nobody is standing in a closet the morning of the session feeling overwhelmed. Here is the guide we walk every client through.
Start With Color, Not the Dress
Before picking a single garment, choose a color palette for the whole group. Soft neutrals (cream, taupe, sage, dusty blue) photograph beautifully against most of our outdoor locations, whether that is an open field or a garden setting, and they age well in photos too. A palette does not mean everyone wears the exact same color. It means every piece you choose works together, the way a well planned outfit looks intentional without looking matched from a store rack. Avoid large logos, busy prints, and neon colors, all three tend to pull the eye away from faces in a photo.
Flowing Fabrics That Move Well at Golden Hour
For the mother to be, fabrics with movement almost always outperform structured, fitted pieces. Chiffon, soft jersey, and lightweight cotton catch a breeze and add motion to a photo, which is part of why flowing maxi dresses have become the signature look of maternity photography. A form fitting dress can absolutely work too, especially for a more editorial, fashion forward set of images, but it photographs differently, sharper and more posed, rather than soft and drifting.
Maternity Dresses for Your Photoshoot: Buy, Borrow, or Rent
You do not need to own a dress you will only wear once. Maternity dresses for a photoshoot are one of the most searched topics for a reason: there is genuine confusion about whether to buy, borrow, or rent, and honestly, all three are reasonable choices. Buying makes sense if the dress works for other occasions too (a baby shower, a maternity portrait years from now if you have another baby). Borrowing from a friend who had a recent maternity session is common and free. Renting from an online maternity photoshoot dress service has become popular in the last few years and gives access to a formal, editorial style dress for a fraction of the retail price, worn for one afternoon and shipped back. Whichever route you choose, order or borrow it at least two to three weeks ahead so there is time for a different size if something does not fit the way you expected.
Dressing the Rest of the Family
If your partner and other children are joining the session, keep their outfits simpler and quieter than yours. Solid colors, soft textures, nothing that competes for attention. A general rule that works well: your partner in a neutral button down or soft sweater, kids in solid colors from the same palette, nobody in stark white or head to toe black, both of which photograph as harsh blocks of color rather than blending into the scene.
What to Skip
A few things reliably cause trouble in photos: shiny, synthetic fabrics that catch harsh reflections in direct sun, tight waistbands or belts that dig in and show in photos (comfort matters more than you would think for how relaxed you look), and brand new shoes you have not broken in, since most sessions involve more walking than people expect. Simple, comfortable, and well fitted beats trendy every time.
One Outfit or Two
A single, well chosen dress is enough for a beautiful maternity gallery, and plenty of our clients stop there. If you would like variety, a second outfit change works well too, most often a softer, more casual look (jeans and a simple top, or a robe style set for a more intimate, in-home feel) paired with the flowing dress for the outdoor portion of the session. Two outfits does mean building in a short change of clothes partway through, so let us know ahead of time if that is the plan, so we can budget the extra minutes into your session.
Accessories and Small Details
Simple jewelry (small earrings, a delicate necklace) reads well in photos without pulling focus. A few clients like to include a small nod to the pregnancy itself, a hand resting on the belly, a sonogram photo tucked into a hand, or older siblings’ shoes lined up next to a pair of tiny newborn ones. None of this is required. The simplest sessions, just you, your partner, and soft natural light, tend to be the ones that hold up best over time once the gallery arrives.
Timing Your Session and Your Outfit Together
Most maternity sessions happen between weeks 28 and 34, when the belly is full and rounded but before the final weeks bring more fatigue and swelling. This window also matters for your outfit: if you are ordering or renting a dress, factor in that your size may still shift slightly in the final weeks, so leave room to adjust rather than ordering your exact pre pregnancy size. If you are still deciding on timing at all, our guide on when to book newborn photos covers how the maternity and newborn conversations usually happen together, since most families book both at once during the second trimester.
